Tonbridge Angels Youth U8 Team - Match Reports

  16 September 2007

Westerham 1-1 Tonbridge Angels

In our first competitive match we excelled in all departments. Playing up-hill in the first half we went behind half way through but through the determination of Nathan Davey and Sammie McLeod's persistence down the wing, we soon equalised with Gary Drawbridge scoring from inside the box.

We pressed for the winner throughout most of the second half, and had a dubious "goal" disallowed. Fine saves from Charlie Barlow ensured we got a deserved point and a Man of the Match Captain's performance from Nathan Davey epitomised our dogged determination. All in all, a very satisfying start to the season from every player in the team.

Tonbridge Angels 4-2 Orpington Rovers B

Chasing their first win, the Angels dominated the early play but with their first attack, Rovers scored against the run of play. Angels soon woke and pressed for an equaliser, with Robert Lawrence scoring before half time. In the second half the midfield battles were won due to interceptions by Man of the Match, Gary Drawbridge putting both Robert through for another goal and having a hand in Henry Ivey's 2 goals. With Sammie McLeod making darting runs and Arthur Bradley and Nathan Davey rock solid in defence, we conceded a late goal at the end of an impressive performance.

Darwin 2-1 Tonbridge Angels

After starting strongly, the Angels couldn't find a way through Darwin's stubborn defence, with Sammie McLeod hitting the post being the highlight. Three minutes into the second half, our persistent midfield finally made an opening for Sammie to put away a fine shot from a long throw-in from Nathan Davey. Pushing forward opened gaps for the opposition to pull back through a penalty. Only after substitutes, Tom Knight and Matthew Colyer came on, did we get any urgency back in our game. With both teams pushing for a win, Darwin scored late on. Angels' first loss, but one to learn from.

Tonbridge Angels 18-0 Battlebridge

Tonbridge Angels returned to winning ways, with a spirited and professional performance. Slick passing moves and determined runs through the heart of the defence ensured Henry Ivey (5) and Sammie McLeod (4) earned a well deserved win. Nathan Davey (3) and Tom Knight were also on the score sheet in what was no doubt a moral boost for the team. Angels were barely troubled and proved finally that hard work on the training ground pays off. I'm sure there will be harder games to come but hope we can take this performance to our next game.

Goal scorers: Henry Ivey (5), Sammie McLeod (4), Nathan Davey (3), Tom Knight (1) and Alex King (2) (plus own goals)

Tonbridge Angels 4-2 Monotype

Despite wet and windy conditions, and against a very physical Monotype side, the Angels were determined from the off. The boys had most of the possession and by halftime had established a 2 - 0 lead. After a third for the Angels, Monotype turned on the pressure but their goal was soon followed by a fourth from Angels. Monotype scored again towards the end but the Angels team spirit and superior football skills shone through. The whole team played terrific football, with Man of the Match going to Gary Drawbridge. Keeper Nathan Davey deserves special mention for some tremendous saves.

Goal scorers: Sammie McLeod (2) & Henry Ivey (2)

Man of the Match: Gary Drawbridge

  6 January 2008

Tonbridge Angels 5-0 Hamsey Rangers Falcons

After a tense start, Angels opened the scoring midway through the first half with a rifled shot which the keeper had no chance. Going 2 nil up just before half time the game was then dominated in the second half by a powerful overall team performance. The slick passing and strong tackling right through the whole team, including the substitutes, was a reflection of the best performance of the season, with 3 more well executed goals in the 2nd half. Every player had a hand in the win, though it was Man of the Match Sammie McLeod, who scored all 5 goals.

Tonbridge Angels 5-2 Westerham

Angels, back to full strength, went 1-0 down early on but battled back to 2-1 through Gary Drawbridge and Sammie McLeod's fine shooting, however Westerham drew back just on half-time. The second half continued very close, with both sides going close when a reshuffle moved Alex Kirby to attack, which quickly brought dividends with McLeod breaking the deadlock after a confident run and shot. Angels' fitness on a sticky pitch, and shooting ability brought two more goals, a hat-trick for McLeod (for the second match in a row), and a second for the hard working Man of the Match, Drawbridge.

Orpington Rovers B 1-2 Tonbridge Angels

The Angels brought their level of teamwork to a new level with a hard won victory over Orpington. Floating defender Alex Kirby worked hard to create openings, leading to a number of corners. An inswinger from Sammie McLeod went agonisingly close before another driven corner from Kirby saw McLeod pounce to score. Soaking up Orpington's attacks, a long ball saw Henry Ivey run and shoot well for the Angels to go 2-0 up into half time. A keenly fought second half saw Orpington score, but a strong goalkeeping display from Nathan Davey left Angels taking the win.

  3 February 2008

Tonbridge Angels 1-1 Darwin

On a very testing pitch the Angels did everything in the first half but score. Sammie Mcleod, Henry Ivey and Gary Drawbridge all went close with excellent shots, kept out by fine keeping and various posts. It was Alex Kirby who opened the scoring though early in the second half, with a fine shot following a sweeping move between Ivey and McLeod. The Angels dominated in midfield but were caught on the break and conceded a few minutes from the end. Angels continued to shoot on sight but could not manage the second goal their performance richly deserved.

Battlebridge 1-14 Tonbridge Angels

Angels welcomed back Charlie Barlow in goal for what turned out to be a quiet game for him. Tonbridge settled first with two strikes in three minutes, going into the break 5 - 1 up. Into the second half, Tonbridge took control of the game, showing confidence in going forward, which quickly saw their lead grow. Stand in goalkeeper, Nathan Davey capped off a strong second half performance with a fine shot and goal from 20 yards. Sammie McLeod continued his goal scoring run, finishing with a well struck free kick, but scoring honours went to Gary Drawbridge with five.

  9 March 2008

Tonbridge Angels 0-0 Tunbridge Wells Foresters

A much anticipated local derby saw these 2 high flying teams battle, tackle and more importantly, play very exciting football. Both teams hit the framework and were unlucky not to have scored, though it would have been harsh being a loser in this match. Angels passed well through the whole team, with Sammie McLeod and Alex Kirby both going close. At the other end, Nathan Davey and Arthur Bradley combined well and would not be beaten. In the final seconds of the game, a point blank save from Charlie Barlow ensured this thoroughly enjoyable match finished even.
