Fisher Athletic 3
- 0 Tonbridge Angels
With four regular
squad members being unavailable, Angels’ somewhat depleted under
18’s Kent Youth League side travelled to Fisher Athletic on Sunday,
still with only one away point from their travels in the current
campaign.
Starting
nervously, the Angels had two early chances from Josh Biddlecombe
narrowed down by Fisher’s in-form goalkeeper, whilst Ally Hamilton
held his own at the other end, despite picking up an injury early
in the first half.
As in
previous weeks, Biddlecombe was targeted by the physical South London
side and took more than his fair share of knocks as he looked to
open the scoring. Right-sided midfielder Jake Miller came closest
to setting up the Kent side, after his square ball was intercepted
in the goalmouth, after hard-working Joe Adams turned and fired
narrowly wide after taking on the defence single-handed.
Biddlecombe
continued to threaten, firing wide from outside the penalty area,
with skipper Sonny Miles driving over the crossbar from thirty yards
before Fisher had their first on-target shot minutes before the
interval, which was securely held by Hamilton.
After
the restart, Athletic looked to make amends for the goalless first
half, putting the Angels under immediate pressure and testing Hamilton,
who pulled off an outstanding save in the opening minutes. Central
defender Elliott (Rambo) Harland provided the first of several well-timed
clearances, before Angels tried to take advantage of freekicks as
midfielder Chris Page was fouled twice in as many minutes. But a
new surge of attacks from the Dulwich-based side brought the first
goal on the hour, as the ball was stabbed home in a crowded penalty
area.
Frustrated
by the undeserved deficit, a string of yellow cards were produced
for wreckless challenges, with the Angels collecting four out of
the six that were handed out in the remaining thirty minutes.
Midway
through the second spell, Fisher took advantage of a cruel deflection
off Hamilton, to score what will go down as the softest goal conceded
to date, with no-one to challenge the surprised striker, who had
been played onside by the unfortunate goalkeeper.
Despite
continued spells of pressure, the Angels fought back courageously,
with the best chance falling to Olly Funnell, whose on-target free-kick
was tipped over the bar by Fisher’s custodian. But with time and
the points slipping away, Athletic strung together the most attractive
and virtually unchallenged assault of the match, finishing clinically
to take an unstoppable three-goal advantage in the closing stages.
Joe Adams
picked up the ‘Man of the Match’ accolade for an industrious match-long
performance.

1- 5 Tonbridge
Angels
Chris
Hollyoak and Colin Blewden’s Angels’ under 18’s Kent Youth League
side recorded an emphatic 5-1 away win against Bromley on Sunday,
with a flawless four-goal second-half performance, that saw them
climb to sixth place in the table.
Angels,
facing their fifth away match in seven starts, again started the
stronger of the two sides, with early shots from Sonny Miles and
Olly Funnell showing early signs of what was to follow.
The Blues
first had to overcome a ‘soft’ goal, that was scored against the
run of play midway through the half, and tightened up at the back
accordingly. An incident involving defender Will Jagger in the Angels’
penalty area as halftime approached, resulted in the loss of a Bromley
player, which saw the home side having to re-organise to take on
the might of the threatening Blues.
With seconds
left of the first half, Nick Hollyoak’s throw-in was fed into
Bromley’s penalty
area by Josh Biddlecombe for Jake Miller to fire home clinically
from six yards.
After Blewden’s half-time instruction, the Angels never looked back,
and continued assaults on the home-side’s goalmouth ensued, with
Biddlecombe’s low cross being stabbed home by skipper Miles from
twelve yards.
The return of the industrious Matt Knight on the hourmark, gave
the Angels more attacking options, with his first effort being flashed
across the face of Bromley’s goal, with Chris Page being only inches
away from connecting. Knight was somehow denied a penalty, when
clipped from behind, but made amends midway through the half, scoring
from close range to give a comfortable 3-1 lead.
Further chances fell to both sides, perhaps with Bromley being the
closest, missing from point-blank range after Angels’ goalkeeper
Ally Hamilton had blocked their first on-target effort. Only Biddlecombe’s
fifth yellow card of the season marred what was rapidly becoming
the most memorable performance of the campaign. However, he regained
his composure and made amends with ten minutes left on the clock,
as he pounced after Bromley’s custodian had misread the ball, to
score the Angels’ fourth goal.
Incensed
by the increasing scoreline, Miles and Funnell were both thwarted
as they looked for more, until a sublime strike from Funnell completed
the rout, courtesy of the underside of the crossbar.
Post-match,
Blewden commented that “It was a good performance, they made the
extra man count. The defence were superb, and there was good team
spirit.”
Central
Defender Elliott (Rambo) Harland was unanimously declared ‘Man of
the Match’.
Next week,
the Angels entertain Sevenoaks Town in PLAAYA cup action.

Angels 3 - 0
Sevenoaks Town
PLAAYA
Cup - Round 1
With five regular players being unavailable, Colin Blewden’s Angels’
under 18’s Kent Youth League side continue to impress, keeping their
100% home record intact, whilst comfortably beating neighbouring
Sevenoaks Town 3-0 in the PLAAYA Cup (1st round) at Edenbridge on
Sunday.
Another dominant start saw the Blues intent to take an early grasp
on the game, with midfielder Chris Page seeing his 4th minute effort
deflected, and Elliott (Rambo) Harland driving over the bar, before
they snatched the lead, when Joel Sanders’ blocked shot was stabbed
home by the in-form Jake Miller from close range after ten minutes.
Further first-half attempts from the Angels, included Joe Adams’
wild lash across the face of the goal, and skipper Sonny (Birthday
Boy) Miles lobbing over the visitor’s crossbar.
Sevenoaks’ only first-half attempt to level the scores was securely
held by Angels’ goalkeeper Ally Hamilton, whose
quick-thinking allowed Liam Herbert to send a searching ball through
to Sanders, whose shot was again blocked, but fired home by Matt
Knight at an acute angle, for his second goal in as many outings.
Miles was denied the perfect birthday present, when his thirty-yard
‘screamer’ was held on the second attempt by the Sevenoaks keeper,
five minutes before the interval.
Soon after
the restart, Sevenoaks had another chance to get on the scoresheet,
but their free-kick was headed clear by Liam Herbert. From the clearance,
Sanders’ persistence was rewarded when he broke through the Sevenoaks
defence, rounded the keeper and calmly slotted home to give the
Angels an intangible three-goal advantage.
Continued
pressure instigated by Knight, with a series of runs down the right
flank and penetrating crosses, kept the visitors held back in their
own half, with only the occasional counter attack occurring, all
of which were thwarted by Hamilton in a flawless performance
between the home
side’s goalposts.
Angels
defender Liam Herbert unanimously took the ‘Man-of-the-Match’ accolade.
Coach
Chris Hollyoak commented “It was a good result. Being 2-0 up at
half-time meant the next goal was the decider; if they scored next
it would be ‘game on’, if we scored next it would be ‘game over’.”
The Angels now travel to Erith Town for a 2nd round encounter. Next
Sunday, the Blues host Real 60 in the Kent County F.A. Youth Cup.

Tonbridge Angels 2
- 1 Real 60
KCFA
Youth Cup - Round 1
Colin Blewden’s under 18’s secured their third successive victory,
in a real ‘Knights tale’ with a narrow 2-1 win against Real 60 in
the KCFA Youth Cup (1st round), in blustery conditions at Edenbridge
on Sunday.
The Blues,
still unbeaten at home, took another early first-half lead, when
Matt Knight burst through Real’s defence in the sixth minute, to
comfortably slot home his third goal in as many matches. After twenty
minutes, the Blues came close to doubling their narrow advantage,
when persistent play from Chris Page set up Josh Biddlecombe, who
hit wide of the target. Clever interplay between Page and Knight
picked out skipper Luke Blewden, whose effort was directed straight
at the visiting goalkeeper. With ten minutes left on the clock,
the Angels neglected to clear a Real throw-in deep in their own
half, and were punished when Ally Hamilton was lobbed, and the scores
were levelled.
In an effort to restore the lead, the Angels won a succession of
quick corners before the interval, the third of which was fired
over the crossbar by Page. With mounting frustration on pitch, Sonny
Miles picked up his third yellow card of the season, before sending
a well-flighted free-kick towards Knight, who was beaten to the
ball by Real’s in-form goalkeeper. The closing minutes saw both
sides fail to grab a second goal, with Will Jagger clearing the
decks at one end, while a late piece of flair from Nick Hollyoak,
Page, Knight and Biddlecombe failed to clinch what could have been
an untold half-time advantage for the home side.
With Elliot (Rambo) Harland being unavailable due to prior boxing
commitments, manager Blewden re-shuffled and strengthened the back
four during the break, bringing Nat Janks in alongside Jagger. A
further spell of non-productive play and the loss of Biddlecombe
through injury, saw the introduction of Joe Adams and Olly Funnell,
almost to immediate effect as the Angels entered what could be construed
as their most awesome spell of attacking play to date.
Continued
attacks down the respective flanks from Adams and Hollyoak began
to push the visitors back into their own half, with only the exploits
of their goalkeeper keeping the rampant Knight and Funnell at bay.
Brief respites in almost unrelenting attacks allowed Real the odd
half-chances, one of which was headed over an inviting goal from
Hamilton’s palmed-out clearance, with another being adequately cleared
by Liam Herbert. It was no surprise that it was Funnell who eventually
picked out Knight, who confidently stabbed home his fourth goal
of the campaign as he arrived in the panic-stricken defence, and
netted to set up a home tie against Whitstable Town in the next
round.
Angels
were unfortunate not to increase the narrow lead, with Knight heading
wide to deny himself a hat-trick, and then being unable to latch
onto Hollyoak’s low drive across a poorly defended goalmouth in
the closing seconds.
Matt Knight was awarded the ‘Man of the match’ accolade for a sublime
performance.
A spokesman
for the team commented “For the last twenty minutes, it was an intense
display of attacking football.”
In a tight
schedule of important matches, the Angels now face Erith Town on
Thursday 1st November in the Invitation Cup (2nd round), and travel
to Dulwich Hamlet for league action on Sunday 4th November.
