Ebbsfleet 0
- 2 Tonbridge Angels
Tesco Youth
Cup - Quarter Final
The Angels travelled
to Ebbsfleet for the Quarter Final of the Tesco Cup. A small pitch
and Ebbsfleet’s tactic of closing down quickly with many players
behind the ball made for a very congested and scrappy opening to
the game. Though the Angels were very comfortable, their attacks
were snuffed out by double and sometimes triple teaming the blues
attackers. With Ebbsfleet playing one upfront, the Angels were never
in any serous trouble. With 10 minutes to go in the first-half,
a tactical change by the Angels to try and create more clear cut
chances left the boys in an unfamiliar formation and unsure of who
to pick up. Ebbsfleet immediately took advantage by pushing more
men forward and finishing the half stronger. This continued for
the beginning of the second-half but gradually the better quality
of the Angels players started to tell. Leek on the right was exceptional,
the back line solid with Healy putting in a stoic performance, keeper
Shimmin’s assured handling only adding to the Angels growing confidence.
With such a congested midfield it was hard for a central player
to shine but “Man of the Match” Tudor-Pole stood out for his tireless
running, fearless tackling and fine touches and was duly rewarded
by grabbing the Angels first with a beautifully struck low drive.
Any comeback would surely have been self-inflicted at this point
as the Angels were in control. With the game opening up, the Angels
passing began to tell and a series of attacks finally paid off when
hard-working Murrain poked home the second. A great cup run continues
and surely the Angels must believe they can go all the way.
