Tonbridge Angels 1
- 0 Dartford
Tesco Youth
Cup - 3rd Round
A real English
winter’s day cup tie, up against high winds, driving rain and an
undefeated Dartford, the Angel’s mental strength and unity were
sure to be tested. Playing into the wind in the first-half the Angels
were penned in for much of the first period. With ten men behind
the ball, lone striker Hillier had little chance to make an impact.
Isolated he gamely chased down every ball but outnumbered he could
not make the ball stick. Valiant, disciplined defending and with
keeper Shimmin combining assured handling and some fine saves the
half ended all square. Now, with the wind behind and with the midfield
supporting, the blues started to create problems for a very organised
Dartford team. With Allen, Ricketts and Leek now supporting striker
Murrain, it looked much more of an even contest. Though physical
Dartford were a constant threat, defenders Healy, Skillen and Greenstock
stuck to their task diligently and more clear cut chances started
to go the Angels way. With 15 minutes to go the game was on a knife
edge and in these conditions no-one was looking forward to extra
time. With 10 minutes to go and the whole squad putting in a “Man
of the Match” performance, the blues were finishing the stronger.
To the delight of the home crowd and their team mates, Murrain chased
down a ball by the right corner flag, shrugged off his marker, looked
up and fired a left-footed cross for Green to grab the deserved
winner. A fantastic performance, every player can feel proud of
their contribution.
Goal Scorers: David Green
Man of
the Match: The Whole Squad - Allround outstanding
performance.

Welling United 3
- 0 Tonbridge Angels
Looking to extend
their unbeaten run going into the Christmas period, the Angels went
into the game full of confidence on an unlikely sunny December afternoon.
However, the small pitch hindered the Angels passing game as the
action was compressed in the middle of the pitch. Almost everytime
the midfield looked to play in Keens or Hillier the penalty box
swallowed up the through ball, but despite the lack of chances for
the strikers in the first half, the defence held strong enabling
the team to go into the half-time break all square. The game continued
to be a tight contest in the second half, but just as the team changed
to 4-4-2 a break by Welling resulted in a penalty as Jones tangled
with the left winger. Soon after Welling scored again from a free-kick,
and as the Angels chased the game some lackadaisical passing and
poor defending allowed Welling to add a third. Although the Angels
have performed much better this season, a mention must be given
to Greenstock and "Man of the Match Healy" who were superb
in defence. With the Christmas break upon us the Angels have a chance
to recharge their batteries and forget about this match before the
big cup game in the New Year.
Man of the Match: Tadgh
Healy - Always sweeping up and strong in the air.
